The Golden Compass

For those concerned Catholics worried about the plethora of opinions flying back and forth about the movie The Golden Compass, I recommend the Sci-Fi Catholic's review of the literature behind the movie.

As always DGD is the benchmark for wit and wisdom on all things Sci-Fi. Unlike most other commentators he actually reads the primary sources and does the kind of research which would be considered a necessity if one were commenting or reviewing material in any other field.

It seems that people seem to switch off their standards monitor when dealing with Fantasy/Sci-Fi material. I actually had one friend say "Yes, but Pete... if it were serious literature it would warrant serious scholarship." He survived being chased out of the house with a rolled up newspaper but I'm told he will bear the psychological scars for life at being called names he hadn't heard of, because he will have to read Fantasy novels to find out what they mean.

Not so with DGD. Take my advice. Make his blog your first point of call regarding a Catholic take on all things Sci-Fi. Actually, I would broaden that to a sensible approach to Sci-Fi in general.
